Persephone
Queen of the Underworld
In ancient Greek mythology, Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and the harvest godess Demeter. She became Queen of the Underworld after being abducted by her uncle Hades, the god-king of the underworld. When Persephone lives under ground, her absence brings winter and the Earth is cold and unproductive. When she emerges, spring blossoms and the Earth is productive once again.

This modern interpretation of the ancient myth depicts the garden's return to life in the Spring as Persephone breaks free of Hade's grasp and returns to Earth's surface. The life-sized figure was carved from Indiana limestone.
