Wood Sculpture
Stone carving projects at the Indiana Limestone Symposium are intensive, exhausing events. Wood is a much easier medium to carve, and its fibrous grain contributes tensile strength that is beneficial for figure carving. Wood is also much lighter, which enables the creation and installation of larger, life-sized statues.
Nidaba was the Sumerian goddess of writing, learning, and the harvest. Although referred to in literature, no ancient statues of the godess are known to exist. This modern carving depicts the Goddess with one eye open to see the world as it is, and the other eye looking inward at how the world ought to be.
Material for a carving of a life-size female giraffe (Gertrude) and her baby (Gussie) at the Maple Tree Symposium in September & October 2017 was the final gift of a large maple tree at the sculptors' home. The carvers were Larry Thibos and his son Cameron.
